I grew up in a rural farming community in Tanzania where over 90% of my family’s income and the wider community depends on agriculture. Farming has always been our way of life, but it has also come with many challenges.
In our village, most farmers rely heavily on chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Over time, these inputs became too expensive and difficult for smallholder farmers to afford, leading to declining soil health, low productivity, and increased frustration among farmers who depend entirely on agriculture for survival.
One painful experience that deeply influenced me was the loss of a community member, which was linked to prolonged exposure and misuse of chemical inputs. This tragedy became a turning point for me and strengthened my commitment to help farmers transition toward safer, more sustainable farming practices.
This is what inspired the creation of Ushindi Ventures. “Ushindi” is a Swahili word meaning winning. Our vision is to create a win–win system for both farmers and livestock keepers by promoting sustainable, affordable, and regenerative farming practices. We aim to help farmers produce food while restoring the environment, rather than degrading it.Through Ushindi Ventures, we work with farmers to promote the bioconversion of organic waste into sustainable livestock feed, reducing dependence on costly commercial feeds. We also train farmers in organic farming practices such as compost production, biochar, organic inputs, seed preservation, and permaculture techniques, enabling them to use locally available resources effectively. Our goal is to build resilient farming communities where farmers can increase productivity, reduce costs, and protect both human health and the environment. With support, we aim to scale these solutions to reach more rural farmers and create lasting impact through having a learning area where farmers from different places they will come visit and learn .
