In Gabura Union of Satkhira, Bangladesh, life is shaped by water, wind, and constant uncertainty. Families here live on the frontline of climate change. Cyclones damage homes, saltwater slowly enters farmland, and tidal flooding continues to reshape the land people depend on for survival.
Yet even in this changing landscape, the land still carries the memory of mangroves, the natural protection system of the Sundarbans that once safeguarded both people and biodiversity.
Mangroves4Life was created with a simple purpose: to help nature recover and to bring local communities back into that process of restoration.
We work through Community-Based Ecological Mangrove Restoration, a nature-based approach that focuses on restoring the natural conditions needed for mangroves to regenerate on their own. Instead of relying only on planting, we observe water flow, elevation, soil conditions, and native species behavior, then support natural regeneration and restore balance step by step.
This work follows a holistic approach that brings together mangrove restoration, biodiversity conservation, sustainable livelihoods, and coastal resilience. Each part is connected because the health of the ecosystem and the wellbeing of the community cannot be separated.
The project is fully community-led, built on strong community ownership. Local youth and women from these same climate-affected villages are at the center of the work. They collect seeds from rivers, manage nurseries, prepare restoration sites, protect young mangroves, and carry out long-term monitoring of ecosystem recovery. This ensures both ecological restoration and lasting stewardship.
We have already restored 1.29 hectares as a proof of concept. This showed us that degraded coastal land can recover when local knowledge and ecological processes work together.
With support from this funding, we will expand restoration across 3 hectares through a phased approach. We will strengthen women-led nurseries, train 30 community members in CBEMR and climate leadership, and support sustainable livelihood opportunities that reduce pressure on mangrove ecosystems while improving household resilience.
Our goal is simple but long-term: to rebuild a living coastal landscape where people and nature support each other again through restoration, stewardship, and continuous monitoring.
Mangroves4Life is our way of strengthening coastal resilience in the Sundarbans, restoring ecosystems, protecting biodiversity, and building a future where communities are active stewards of their own environment.
