Mangrove Heroes: Restoring Indonesia's Vulnerable Coast
The northern coast of Indramayu faces an urgent crisis. Monthly tidal floods ravage homes, destroy fish ponds, and devastate the fishing families who depend on these waters for survival. Yet residents stay—this coastline is their only home.
The culprit: vanishing mangrove forests. These natural barriers absorb wave energy, prevent erosion, and protect shorelines. Without them, floods grow deeper, more frequent, and increasingly catastrophic.
Our solution is elegantly simple: plant mangroves, empower women, build resilience.
Local women will lead this restoration effort, trained as coastal heroes and recognized for their expertise. In a community where formal education access is limited, this program offers something transformative—practical skills, genuine purpose, and a respected place in community life.
But this is about far more than trees. By positioning women as restoration leaders, we're building lasting community strength. Local knowledge becomes valued. Collective action takes root. Dignity returns alongside the coastline.
As the program grows through its first year, we'll pursue partnerships to sustain and expand this work—turning initial restoration into a permanent foundation for coastal resilience and community thriving.
