The Arrábida Super-Bioregion
Regen Waves prides itself on high-velocity, science-backed regenerative practices that seamlessly blend technical ecological restoration with deep community empowerment. Born in 2022 as a passionate grassroots collective and officially structured as an NGO in 2024, our mission is to build a decentralized network of high-density 'Superforests' across the 17,000-hectare Arrábida peninsula in Portugal. Money raised through this campaign will directly accelerate our transition from 10 active operational nodes to an ambitious, bankable pipeline of 50 strategic sites, scaling our impact across the entire regional landscape.
Our Mission We believe that reversing Mediterranean desertification requires shifting local communities from passive observers to active 'Regenerative Guardians.' By deploying hyper-dense, multi-tiered native forest matrices, we restore collapsed ecosystems while ensuring local food and medicinal sovereignty. We empower smallholders, families, and volunteers through hands-on syntropic techniques, turning fragmented terrains into self-regulating climate shields.
Background & Problem Statement The Setúbal and Arrábida peninsula is facing severe climate threats: advanced topsoil desertification, critical watershed depletion, and escalating wildfire cycles, illustrated by the devastating 400-hectare Palmela wildfire scar. Decades of industrial monocultures and over-grazing have left agricultural soils heavily bacteria-dominated, biologically dead, and unable to absorb winter rainfall, creating dangerous erosion and flash-flood vectors near urban fringes.
Solution & Opportunity Our Superforest framework provides a field-proven antidote. By planting native climax matrices at an ultra-high density of 22.8 plants/m², we compress 40 years of natural forest succession into less than 4 years. This serves as an open-source biological engine: our high-intensity hotspots micro-climate the air, act as living fire barriers, and actively enrich the surrounding hectares in a win-win relationship with existing regional conservation zones.
How We Regenerate & Use Funds We engage in holistic landscape regeneration, combining deep microbiology soil resets, advanced water infiltration designs, and community-led land management. The $10,000 match funding from this round will serve as our vital scaling catalyst. It will fund:
Tracking Impact Regen Waves operates with strict laboratory-grade monitoring. Empirical data from our flagship Regen Lab Forest (Site #1) already proves a 1,000% acceleration in topsoil formation, successfully resetting the Fungi-to-Bacteria (F:B) ratio from an arid <0.05 baseline up to an optimal 2.77 within a 3.5-year horizon, alongside a 10-fold surge in water infiltration (150–300 mm/h). Furthermore, bird breeding densities tracked via Cornell Lab's Merlin framework confirmed 8 active nests in just 500 m², alongside the return of indicator species like Fire Salamanders at our riparian interventions. We track both ecological data and qualitative community well-being to ensure localized, permanent governance.
Our Experience & Partnerships Since our collective roots in 2022 and formal NGO establishment in 2024, Regen Waves has successfully delivered verified environmental benefits across 79.5 hectares under active stewardship. Our credibility is backed by robust corporate and institutional alliances, including a formal grant win with Fujitsu Portugal to implement our Superforest Pilot Program for local farmers, and strategic outreach collaboration with ADREPES (Associação de Desenvolvimento Regional) to scale our framework throughout their extensive agricultural network
Time to scale and speed regeneration
The methods have been tested, the biological baseline is validated, and the community matrix is active. We have proven that we can compress decades of ecological decline into years of thriving biodiversity. But climate degradation and wildfire cycles will not wait for slow, bureaucratic rollouts. It is time to scale our 10 hotspots into a 50-site peninsula shield, accelerate regional water security, and secure the Arrábida Super-Bioregion for generations to come.
Our ultimate mission is global: turning Arrábida into an open-source living laboratory to share data and open technical blueprints, inspiring and accompanying other vulnerable bioregions worldwide to adapt and speed up global restoration with partners such as Ma Earth & Restor.
