In the tropical dry and cloud forests between Henri Pittier National Park and Macarao National Park, communities are restoring a landscape where people, forests, and birds can thrive together. This ecosystem is a vital refuge for more than 70 migratory bird species, the endangered Red Siskin, and hundreds of native birds that depend on healthy forests, water sources, and shaded agroforestry systems.
Since 2016, our Agriculture and Biodiversity Program has worked alongside smallholder farmers in the region to transform abandoned and degraded lands into productive agroforestry farms. Through shade-grown coffee, cacao, banana, and native trees, families are protecting biodiversity while strengthening their livelihoods.
Our work combines ecological restoration, farmer training, organic certification, bird-friendly production, and community education. Together, we have protected more than 1000 hectares of forest, planted over 70000 native trees, and supported over 300 farmers in adopting sustainable agroforestry practices.
With this project, we are aiming to expand our impact to 60 additional hectares and benefit at least 30 new smallholder farmers. This is more than a conservation project — it is a community-led movement to restore cultural traditions while improving livelihoods and reconnecting the forest.
