Our Mission
At Loop:Frome, our mission is to help co-create a regenerative circular economy in Frome, one that works in harmony with nature, strengthens local resilience, and reconnects communities to the resources they depend upon. We believe in reimagining systems at a human scale, where cooperation replaces competition and waste becomes nourishment for new life. Through practical action, education, and collaboration, we are building pathways toward a healthier relationship between people, place, and planet.
Background and Problem Statement
Modern economies are built on a linear model: take, make, consume, and dispose. This system extracts finite resources, generates enormous waste, depletes soil health, and disconnects communities from the true value of materials and food systems. Across the UK, vast amounts of food waste and organic matter are still sent to landfill or incineration, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions while agricultural soils continue to lose biodiversity and fertility.
At the same time, communities are increasingly vulnerable to rising costs, fragile supply chains, and environmental instability. Frome, like many towns, faces the challenge of reducing waste while creating stronger local systems that keep value circulating within the community. The need is not simply for better recycling, but for a deeper systemic shift toward regeneration and local resilience. Circular economy research increasingly shows that communities and social enterprises play a critical role in reducing environmental harm while creating social and economic value.
Solution
Loop:Frome exists to demonstrate what a regenerative local economy can look like in practice. We recover valuable organic resources that would otherwise be discarded and transform them into living compost that restores soil health and supports local food systems. By redirecting nutrients back into the earth, we help close the loop between consumption and regeneration.
Our work combines practical circular economy infrastructure with community collaboration. We partner with local groups, businesses, growers, and residents to reduce waste streams, share knowledge, and build systems that benefit the wider ecosystem. Rather than operating in isolation, we see regeneration as a collective effort that requires shared responsibility and local participation.
Beyond composting, Loop:Frome acts as a catalyst for wider cultural change, helping communities rethink the relationship between resources, consumption, and place. Through storytelling, demonstrations, partnerships, and public engagement, we aim to inspire scalable models of regenerative local living.
Opportunity
The transition toward circular and regenerative economies presents a significant social, environmental, and economic opportunity. Research suggests that circular systems can generate millions of new jobs globally while reducing waste, emissions, and resource dependency.
Frome is uniquely positioned to become a model town for local circularity. The area already has a strong culture of independent enterprise, sustainability initiatives, and community action. By investing in local resource loops, regenerative soil systems, and collaborative infrastructure, there is an opportunity to:
Loop:Frome sits at the intersection of environmental restoration, community resilience, and systems innovation, helping demonstrate how local economies can thrive while restoring ecological health.
How We Regenerate
Our regeneration model is rooted in the principle that waste does not exist in nature. Every output from one process can become an input for another.
We regenerate by:
This approach creates benefits far beyond waste reduction. Healthy soils improve biodiversity, water retention, carbon sequestration, and food quality. Stronger local systems also strengthen social connection, resilience, and collective wellbeing.
Tracking Impact
We believe meaningful impact must be measurable, transparent, and continuously improving. Loop:Frome tracks both environmental and community outcomes to understand the real value of regenerative local systems.
Key areas of impact include:
Alongside quantitative metrics, we also value qualitative stories of change, from community engagement and behaviour shifts to strengthened local relationships and increased environmental awareness.
Our Experience
Loop:Frome has emerged from a growing movement of local organisations and citizens working toward a more regenerative future for Frome. Our work builds upon years of community-led sustainability initiatives focused on circular economy thinking, collaboration, and practical environmental action.
We combine hands-on operational experience with systems thinking, partnership building, and community engagement. Our approach is informed by both grassroots experimentation and wider global research into circular economies and regenerative development. By connecting local action with broader environmental and social innovation, we are helping shape practical models for resilient communities in the 21st century.
