Know Your Environment, Educating the Garden City.
Project Story
Lighthouse L2 is rooted in the heart of Port Harcourt, a city of immense energy, creativity, and resilience, yet one bearing the deepest wounds of decades of environmental neglect. The Niger Delta, one of the world's most biodiverse regions, has been scarred by oil spills, gas flaring, deforestation, and coastal erosion. The communities that call this place home have paid the heaviest price. We believe it is time for Port Harcourt's people, its students, entrepreneurs, creatives, and community leaders to be equipped with the knowledge, tools, and networks to understand, respond to, and reverse this damage. Lighthouse L2 exists to make that education real, accessible, and transformative.
Our Mission
Lighthouse L2 believes that lasting environmental change begins with informed, empowered communities. We exist to make climate and regenerative education accessible to everyone in Port Harcourt from university students in Choba to young entrepreneurs in Rumuola, market women in Mile 1, and community leaders across Rivers State. We are committed to building a generation of climate-literate, action-oriented individuals who understand the environmental crisis unfolding around them and have the confidence and tools to respond not just for themselves, but for the communities and ecosystems they call home.
Background & Problem Statement
Port Harcourt sits at the center of one of the most environmentally devastated regions on earth. Decades of oil extraction in the Niger Delta have left a trail of destruction: oil spills that have poisoned rivers and farmland, gas flaring that pumps greenhouse gases into the atmosphere day and night, deforestation that has stripped communities of natural protection, and coastal erosion that is literally washing away the land people live on.
The consequences are devastating and deeply felt:
Yet despite living at the frontline of one of the world's most acute environmental crises, most communities in Port Harcourt have little access to clear, practical, empowering education on climate change, environmental restoration, or regenerative solutions. The gap between the urgency of the crisis and the availability of meaningful education is vast and Lighthouse L2 exists to close it.
Solution
Lighthouse L2 runs structured, community-centered climate and regenerative education programs designed specifically for Port Harcourt and the Niger Delta context. Our workshops and learning programs cover:
Opportunity
Port Harcourt is home to dynamic universities, a large and passionate youth population, and communities with deep knowledge of their own land and ecosystems. Lighthouse L2 sits at the intersection of all of this providing a physical and community hub where climate education, peer learning, and collaborative action happen in real time.
The Niger Delta's environmental crisis is urgent but so is its opportunity. Educated, empowered communities are the most powerful force for environmental restoration and climate resilience. By investing in people, we are building the foundation for a Port Harcourt that heals its land, protects its ecosystems, and leads Nigeria's transition toward a more sustainable and just future.
How We Build Community
We engage the full spectrum of Port Harcourt's community students, market traders, fishermen, farmers, artists, youth groups, and local leaders through peer-led workshops, community field trips, environmental monitoring projects, and collaborative restoration initiatives. Funds from this campaign will help us expand our workshop series, develop locally relevant learning materials in English and Pidgin, bring in expert environmental educators and scientists, and create pathways for community members to connect with regional and global climate networks.
Tracking Impact
Every program we run will be tracked and evaluated with care. We will measure the number of community members educated, workshops delivered, local restoration projects initiated, and advocacy actions taken. Beyond the numbers, we will collect and share the lived stories of individuals and communities whose understanding, confidence, and agency have grown through access to climate education. Because this project is rooted in Port Harcourt, our success is measured not just by what people learn but by what they go on to protect, restore, and demand for their communities and their land.
Our Experience
Lighthouse L2 has been building community in Port Harcourt through grassroots education events, environmental awareness programs, and community learning gatherings. What began as a small circle of passionate, curious minds has grown into a recognized hub for climate education and community empowerment in Rivers State. Our network of educators, environmentalists, community leaders, and young innovators continues to grow and this project represents our most ambitious step yet toward a Port Harcourt that leads its own regenerative future.
