Trasubbie watershed conservation and Natura2000 recognition

i prodotti della Natura is a regenerative farm near the village of Cana, partially operating inside the SIR (Site of Regional Interest)Torrente Trasubbie.

The area is formally recognized for its ecological value, but the existing protection is not enforced by any local institution.

Hunting disturbance, hydromorphological alteration, water stress and other cumulative pressures are rapidly eroding the ecosystems in this high-Biodiversity spot.

At i prodotti della Natura we try to address some of these challenges thru our daily work: we clean up dumped trash reguralrly, keep water bodies flowing while hydrating the land, set up feeding and drinking areas for the wildlife; within a local supply-chain, we also manage discarded biomass, especially from Olive prunings, that would otherwise end up burnt.

Abbruciamento, or open burning, is the primary cause of wildfires in this area, with up to 75% of causality.

In January 2024, a fire south-west of Cana, between SP24 Fronzina and the Trasubbino, burned 26 hectares and reached the farm. In August 2025, a larger fire between Roccalbegna and Campagnatico burned about 500 hectares and damaged farms around Cana.

Today we seek help from supporters of Nature: The SIR Trasubbie needs enhanced protection, and deserves to be recognized on an European and International level for its incredible and rare ecological value; we plan to do make this happen by working in collaboration with the ATA delle Trasubbie e del Trasubbino to obtain:

• a professional Agroecological assessment or the 1000+ SIR Trasubbie hectares;
• Associazione di Tutela Ambientale formal registration, wider membership tools;
• the full Conservation Dossier including the Agroecological assessment, its signataries and further public documentation/research, and its formal submission to the four municipalities tasked to start the Natura2000 status updated for the Trasubbie/Trasubbino area.
