The Ethiopian highlands are sources of water and land for agriculture with over 120 million people living in mountains rely on subsistence agriculture. Natural areas are restricted to the highest peaks important for endemic species and vital sources of water, pastures and firewood. While their environmental value is undeniable, conservation conflicts with increasing demand for cropland, grazing and livelihoods are barely sustainable. Prospective to mainstream biodiversity in mountain landscapes are scanty or not apparent but political developments are encouraging. For example, the Amhara National Regional State EPA is working to establish protected areas in Afroalpine ranges Delanta-Gubalaftu range is small and under heavy pressure from grazing and firewood collection but persist critical wolf population. Protecting and restoring this range is priority for Dinkenesh Ethiopia as stated in the National Action Plan for Ethiopian Wolf Conservation (NAP, 2017).This prize money will help us to scale up project promoting community based resource management and alternative livelihoods with conservation and economic impacts in Delanta Gubalaftu range and other areas where Ethiopian wolves survive. The project address Goal 3 Afroalpine habitats protected from further degradation, conserved and restored; Goal 6 Mechanisms developed to fairly share the costs and benefits of livelihoods, wolf and Afroalpine natural resources conservation as stated in EWCP NAP, 2017.
