Over the last two years, we have been motivating and supporting smallholder farmers in the Mt. Elgon region of Uganda to restore their land, conserve biodiversity and mitigate deadly landslides through meaningful incentives, thanks to support from partners, including Ma Earth.
While presenting at the Global Solutions Summit in Berlin, one of the participants in the audience asked me “When do the incentives stop” ? I immediately realized that we had left out a very important segment of the population, children!
This motivated me to author Saving Bubungi, a Buzzing Adventure, along with students from the Future17 Program. Together, we created an interactive children’s storybook that explores the deep connection between people, nature, and climate.
Through an immersive forest adventure, children discover the ways of the forest, learn how to coexist with nature, and develop community-driven visions for a sustainable future which they implement.
A free digital copy of the book has been published. However, children in rural communities such as Bubungi and surrounding areas face limited access to digital devices and internet connectivity, preventing them from benefiting from the resource.
The project will deliver printed books and conduct environmental education workshops in 25 rural schools over a period of 6 months.
Imagine children coming together to draw the current state of their school, then reimagining it as a greener, more vibrant space filled with trees, flowers, bug hotels, bees, butterflies, and life. Step by step, they begin turning that vision into reality. This is just a glimpse of what the book inspires and teaches. Join us on this journey toward nurturing a generation that grows with nature.
