Chaboco Natura: Restoring Lanzarote's Living Heritage
Lanzarote's native plants are disappearing. Adapted to survive extreme drought, fierce winds, and poor soils, these remarkable species now face threats from urban sprawl, invasive ornamentals, and forgotten traditional knowledge. In many communities, locals no longer recognize the plants that define their island's identity and resilience.
Chaboco Natura is changing this. Created by local NGO Arrecife Natura, this one-hectare conservation site transforms abandoned farmland and volcanic terrain into a thriving ecosystem hub. It combines ecological restoration, native plant cultivation, seed banking, and hands-on education—creating both a conservation powerhouse and outdoor classroom.
The work is tangible: planting native species, documenting biodiversity, collecting seeds, creating habitats for pollinators and wildlife, and involving schools, volunteers, and residents in active restoration. Through field activities, workshops, and guided visits, people reconnect with Lanzarote's botanical heritage while participating directly in its recovery.
Currently, our biggest challenge is capacity. Your support funds an employee for environmental education programs, which enables school visits, and community engagement activities.
We're building a replicable model for dry island conservation—one that can inspire restoration across Lanzarote and beyond, reconnecting communities with the native plants that sustain them.
